Wrinkle Relaxing Injections
The injection of botulinum toxin A (BTA), which is more commonly known as Botox, has become very popular for reducing wrinkles and rejuvenating the aging face. The effects of BTA are only temporary lasting approximately 3 months, although longevity depends on environmental and physical factors of the individual.
The injections can be done quickly, they require no recovery time and are not as complicated as many other cosmetic procedures for the face.
A thorough consultation would be required before hand to ensure that there are no medical contraindications to you having the treatment.

Scientific facts
Botulinum toxin is produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. When a small amount of Botox is injected into a muscle, it blocks nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract.
The effect is that it temporarily weakens or paralyzes the facial muscles and smooth’s or eliminates wrinkles in the skin for a few months. These muscles are specially selected depending on the area of the face which you require treating.
Risks & side effects
The most common side effects are:
• Headache
• Bruising
• Drooping eyelid that may last 2 weeks
Other rare side effects include: flu-like symptoms, nausea, temporary facial pain, redness at the injection site, reduced blinking, and weakness in the muscles of the face.
Although extremely rare, this muscle weakness can limit your facial expressions.
Although wrinkle relaxing injections have been used for cosmetic use for many years, the risks of repeated Botox injections are currently not known.
What to expect after
For the first 4 hours after treatment, you will be asked to take it easy and not rub the treated area. It is advised that you move the treated muscle as much as possible, for example, by the way of frowning and raising of the eyebrows. This allows the toxin to spread evenly throughout the target muscle. Using the gym, sunbed or drinking alcohol should be avoided for the next 24 – 48 hours.
It can take around 48 hours before you notice an effect from the Botox, however the full effect may take up to 1 week and in some individuals 2 weeks. The results may last from 2 to 3 months on average but sometimes up to 4 months. After that, you will begin to see the wrinkles return.
There are various types of BTA in production within the UK. The only BTA used at Cotswold and County Aesthetics is Allergan’s Botox 50 and 100.

Allergan Botulim Toxin
The active constituent in BOTOX is a protein complex derived from Clostridium botulinum. The protein consists of type A neurotoxin and several other proteins. Under physiological conditions it is presumed that the complex dissociates and releases the pure neurotoxin. Clostridium botulinum toxin type A neurotoxin complex blocks peripheral acetylcholine release at presynaptic cholinergic nerve terminals.
Intramuscular injection of the neurotoxin complex blocks cholinergic transport at the neuromuscular junction by preventing the release of acetylcholine.
The nerve endings of the neuromuscular junction no longer respond to nerve impulses and secretion of the chemo transmitter is prevented (chemical denervation). Re-establishment of impulse transmission is by newly formed nerve endings and motor end plates. Clinical evidence suggests that BOTOX reduces pain and neurogenic inflammation and elevates cutaneous heat pain thresholds in a capsaicin induced trigeminal sensitization model. Recovery after intramuscular injection takes place normally within 12 weeks of injection as nerve terminals sprout and reconnect with the endplates, as Cited on Electronic Medicines Compendium (EMC)
Botulim Toxin or wrinkle relaxing injections were found to be affective in treating not only neurological medical conditions, but also in treating cosmetic lines and wrinkles.
Areas that we can inject, include dynamic lines created by muscle movement of the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet of the upper face. Botox of the lower face include, gummy smile, downturn mouth, dimple of the chin and masseter muscle relaxation. The suppression of the muscle can last around 12 weeks and sometimes longer, however longevity is largely subjective.
Here at Cotswold and County Aesthetics, we use only the brand Allergan’s Botox, no other botulim toxin product is used in clinic.
